More Like…. What’s in a Kettle?
The folk story of ‘Stone Soup’ tells of a traveler asking for food from villagers who tell him they have nothing to spare. Owning only a kettle, but being resourceful and a student of humanity, he builds a fire, collects then fills his kettle with water, and announces that he has one ingredient for a delicious meal - a simple stone. As the villagers' curiosity grows, he convinces them that while it is indeed tasty, it would be better if someone could bring one specific item, and better yet if someone else added another ingredient and another and another because it hadn't quite reached its full potential. Momentum builds and others volunteer to contribute something they have. Eventually, the kettle is full of vegetables, meat, & seasonings and a robust pot of soup could be enjoyed by everyone involved - together, as a community. Surprised by how willingly they gave up their precious and unique ingredients, they learned that combining their diverse gifts is more satisfying than what they would have had if cooking alone with only a few ingredients.
When individuals are led to contribute their unique gifts they learn that what begins as a kettle and a stone is transformed into a feast for their community.
